Air Cargo Market Soars: Strong Growth in 2024 Continues

In January 2024, the global demand for air cargo experienced a remarkable surge of 18.4% compared to the previous year. This growth was fueled by a substantial 25.8% increase in international belly capacity, as reported by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). This positive momentum continued into February, with double-digit growth in both demand and spot rates. The air cargo industry has demonstrated robust growth throughout 2024, with demand consistently rising at double-digit rates, indicating a promising future for the sector.

The Ongoing Impact of the Red Sea

In May 2024, shipping in the Red Sea faces persistent challenges amid geopolitical tensions. While ship attacks have temporarily ceased since 23 April, they remain a threat from Houthi rebels. Recent incidents, including a blast near a ship on 25 April, have heightened concerns. War-risk insurance premiums have soared, potentially by 900%, since Houthi attacks began, as noted in a recent UNCTAD report. Additionally, UNCTAD reports a 42% decrease in Suez Canal journeys and a 49% decrease in Panama Canal journeys year-on-year, indicating ongoing challenges likely to endure for months.
